Gordon Brown has taken over as Prime Minister, after using his final weeks as Chancellor to reaffirm his commitment to involving the private sector in Britain's public services.

He has consistently backed the private finance initiative as the main route for investing in Britain's public infrastructure and, in his speech accepting the Labour leadership, he warned the party not to expect the "quick fix" of a lurch to the left.

"If people think we will achieve our goals in the future by retreating to the failed approaches of the past," he said, "then they have not learned the lesson I have learned from the last 10 years."
