A CONVICTED murderer has brought a landmark legal action challenging the constitutionality of Ireland's mandatory life sentence regime.
There are currently about 253 convicted murderers serving life sentences in Irish prisons.
The average life sentence lasts thirteen and a half years.
In a case that may have widespread implications for hundreds of convicted murderers Peter Whelan is claiming that mandatory life sentences are unconstitutional as they do not allow judges to hand down sentences that are proportionate and reflect the seriousness of the crime.
