With its coral reefs, pristine beaches, misty jungles and Mayan ruins, Honduras has been a well-kept secret for scuba divers and adventurous travelers. One of the poorer countries in Central America, Honduras is teetering on the edge of tourism development.
Last year Honduras spent $20,000 on tourism; this year it has $450,000 in tourism development funds from U.S. AID. This doesn't seem like much when compared to Mexico's $30 million tourism budget _ Mexico claims 60 percent of the tourism in Latin America _ but the new funds are definitely a jump-start for this developing country.
