The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm in 1972, was a milestone - some might say, the millstone - in launching global multilateral co-operative efforts on major environmental problems. UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) was born; topics in health, maritime pollution, long-range air pollution, environmental degradation and a global resource database were given their first serious airing. Codewords such as Earthwatch were coined to refer to global environmental assessment.
