Researchers in the field are now saying that the condition popularly known as lactose intolerance is not nearly as prevalent as we have been led to believe. The problem, it seems, has arisen from widespread advertising by manufacturers of products designed to relieve the condition.
Their claim that more than 50 million Americans suffer from lactose intolerance was challenged by researchers at Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee. What may affect the estimated 50 million of us is lactose maldigestion--the inability to fully digest the milk sugar, lactose, in dairy products.
