Although pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) is by far the most common AIDS-defining illness, its prevalence as a first opportunistic infection indicator dropped from 61% in 1985 to 42% in 1992. In the same period, cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis doubled, from 2.6% to 5.2%.
