JERUSALEM
IN THE thirty months since he became Israel's prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin has signed an agreement with the Palestinians, concluded a peace treaty with Jordan, and won the Nobel Peace Prize. He is the first Israeli prime minister to openly visit Arab countries not formally at peace with Israel and the first to be welcome in countries such as Japan and China, previously cool if not openly hostile to Israel. During his tenure, relations between Israel and its main ally, the United States, have been better than ever. Israel's economy, too, has generally done well.
