Article: President Taps Army General To Head Fledgling U.S. Africa Command.(appointment of William Ward )

President Bush recently named Army Gen. William "Kip" Ward to lead U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), the new unified combatant command that will stand up later this year to oversee U.S. military activities on the continent of Africa and coordinate U.S. government diplomatic, economic and political efforts there.

If confirmed by the Senate, Ward, who is currently deputy commander of U.S. European Command (EUCOM), will help AFRICOM achieve its operational status by October.
