Ashford was not in the past highly favoured as a Kent destination, but since the arrival of the Eurostar rail connection it has been altering in character. Now it boasts radicalism, at least in its approach to traffic. The ring road is to be abolished and the town transformed into the largest Shared Space scheme in Europe, which will allow 'pedestrians to mingle freely with slow-moving traffic in a streetscape without pavements, road markings or signs'. To cap it all Ashford is now on the Tour de France route, and it is on this festive weekend of July 7 and 8 that the urban interventions and performances commissioned in relation to the traffic scheme start to roll out, ...
