The whole difference is in the title. The book is not called French Contemporary Art but Contemporary Art in France. It is not a simple portrait of what French artists did in the last four decades but a precise description of a territory made up of ideas, artistic movements and intellectual debates. It is not an alphabetical list of names (even if the text can seem like namedropping for a reader unfamiliar with the artists referred to) but a precise historical description of a whole territory, including its exhibitions, ...
