Jul. 24--MENANDS -- A severe upper respiratory illness has broken out among dogs at the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society, prompting it to alert the public and take steps to avoid a disease outbreak like last year when the agency was forced to kill 340 cats.
Until the facility gets a clean bill of health, it has suspended all dog adoptions and won't take in strays except those brought in by municipalities that have a contract with the agency.
"We're trying to protect everybody. We don't want dogs to go out of here and get others sick," Brad Shear, the society's executive director, said Monday.
