GLADYS SANTANA, 21, WAS AN ATHEIST until last year, when a U.S. missionary offered help with her English. Out of loyalty to "this old man of ours" -- Fidel Castro -- she resisted conversion for months. But there she was at the open doors of a Methodist church in central Havana one recent night, a Bible in her hand and an ecstatic smile on her face. Inside, the pews filled with fellow university students ready to shout "Hallelujah," shake tambourines and testify. Passersby watched her; wasn't she afraid of being seen as a subversive? Santana didn't miss a beat. "If Jesus is with us, who could be against us?" she said. "I am not afraid of anything."
