Jul. 22--There's a big difference between learning something in the classroom, and actually doing it.
The University of Rhode Island is trying to bridge that gap for some of its students through its Coastal Fellows Program, which allows undergraduates to participate in scientific research under the direction of mentors who have chosen to participate.
Lauren Killea, 20, of Coventry, is studying a method to keep invasive species out of ballast water being released by ships. Killea and her mentor, Lucie Maranda, a research scientist at URI's Graduate School of Oceanography, are using a Swedish cargo ship, the Atlantic Compass, ...
