Jul. 24--JAMES CITY -- Mary Schermerhorn bristled at the thought of her previous career, in which she spent five years testing and inspecting packaged foods in a windowless Kellogg Co. laboratory.

"I should have been driving a bus all along," said the 42-year-old Charles City woman, sitting in a conference room at Williamsburg-James City County School District's operations center. Recently arrived from Indiana, where she drove a bus for two years, Schermerhorn had just finished another day of training to be a district school bus driver.
