Whole Foods Market co-founder and Chief Executive Officer John Mackey was largely unknown outside natural-foods circles for more than two decades.

That all changed three years ago when Whole Foods opened a splashy Manhattan store in Columbus Circle. Mackey suddenly became the subject of lengthy profiles in the national media - and he wasn't thrilled about it.

"It's unfortunate, in a way," he told the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman in June 2004. "I've always thought, 'Why should they single me out?' "
