There is too little written on African cinema, considering the rich production now occurring on the continent and also considering the important role film plays in the cultural life and in the dissemination of political and social issues throughout Africa. Previously we had Francoise Pfaff's Twenty-Two Black African Filmmakers, already out of date, and her study of Ousmane Sembene's earlier works. Much of the other writing on African film occurs in French (e.g., Paulin Vieyra, Michael Raeburn, Ola Balogun, Jacques Gerard, Ferid Boughedir, Pierre Pommier), so that the English-speaking viewer has few resources, except for an occasional article in cinema journals such as Film ...
