Braskem develops sugar-cane-based PE
SAO Paulo, Brazil - Braskem SA is using sugar cane as the starting material for polyethylene.
The Sao Paulo petrochemical company converts sugar cane into ethanol. Then the firm converts ethanol into ethylene and, in turn, polymerizes that into high density PE resin. Braskem dubs its polymer "green polyethylene'' because it is based on a renewable resource.
Braskem said it has invested about $5 million in the project and can produce enough HDPE for commercial development. Right now it is doing detailed technical work. By year-end 2009, the company expects to be operating an industrial-scale plant with annual ...
