Nigerian rebel leader Mujahid Dokubo-Asari has held talks with the country's Vice President Goodluck Jonathan in the capital, Abuja, pledging to help end the violence in the oil-producing Niger Delta region. The talks followed calls from prominent delta militant Ateke Tom for a cease-fire in the region.
The government released Ijaw leader Asari--who led the militant Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force--in June after 18 months in jail. The move was widely seen as an attempt by the new government of President Umaru Yar'Adua to kick-start negotiations and bring on board militants as well as delta communities and their leaders (OD Jun.18, p7).
