When Tony Gwynn was little more than a kid with a dream, his morning ritual was to grab the newspaper sports section and immediately turn to the box scores.
But unlike other kids, he didn't first check to see what players had crushed home runs or who had thrown shutouts. He would check to see what Pete Rose, George Brett and Rod Carew had done the previous night.
He enjoyed seeing the lines: 4 2 2 1 -- four at-bats, two runs, two hits, and an RBI. He'd check to see if there were any extra-base hits and maybe the stray stolen base.
