Jul. 29--KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The object of Hank Blalock's rib-removal surgery was to improve blood flow to his arm. A by-product may be that it helps improve his hands, too.

Blalock has had nearly a full month to work daily with manager Ron Washington and infield instructor Art Howe on the fielding techniques that were introduced during spring training. The amount of time Washington and Howe have been able to devote to Blalock alone now far outdistances the time they spent working in spring.
