WORCESTER - Four months after Dr. Aaron Lazare stepped down as chancellor and dean of University of Massachusetts Medical School, the publicly funded school is paying out more than triple his $439,000 salary and benefits for a job he did single-handedly for 16 years.

That $1.4 million total includes Dr. Lazare's full compensation package for a yearlong sabbatical he is on after resigning in March, plus the salaries and benefits for the two new administrators who replaced him in May after UMass officials separated the combined chancellor-dean job into two separate positions.
