Americans are consuming more of their caloric intake from full-service and fast-food restaurants. Between the late 1970s and the middle 1990s, the share of daily caloric intake from food eaten away from home increased from 18% to 32%, according to USDA's Let's Eat Out: Americans Weigh Taste, Convenience, and Nutrition study. The analysis of food intake found that consumers base their choices about where and how often to eat out on three general factors: health, convenience and entertainment value.
