Jul. 30--When Rev. Francis Joseph Cerniglia became a priest in 1953, his whole neighborhood celebrated.
Rev. Cerniglia, who had grown up just west of downtown near Ohio and Orleans Streets, was the first son of immigrants from Villafrati, Italy, also known as Villa Frate, to become a priest in Chicago, said his sister Constance Cleghorn.
All of his extended family and friends with roots in the Sicilian village "were all very proud and elated" when he finished seminary and celebrated his first mass at Santa Maria Addolorata Church, then at 648 N. May St., Cleghorn said.
