Jul. 31--The lead in the American League East is still eight games over the Yankees. With 57 to play, and the Yankees 10 days away from a brutal three-week stretch of their schedule, the Red Sox would appear poised to run out the clock on their first division title since 1995.
After stumbling through an 11-10 stretch dominated by home games against weak opponents, the Red Sox took three of four on the road from wild card contender Cleveland, then won a three-game series against the lowly Devil Rays, whom the Red Sox see 12 more times.
