In 1936-37, De Basil's Ballets Russes performed 21 works on their nine-month journey around Australia. They were brave and lavish works that astounded audiences. Several company members defected, sowing seeds for the birth of the Australian Ballet.
This year, The Australian Ballet is giving tribute to the innovative Ballets Russes choreographer Leonide Massine as part of a four-year project, "Ballet Russes--Our Cultural Revolution."
