Abstract
Aim: 'Normal birth' is a term that has been used for many years to indicate uncomplicated vaginal birth, irrespective of the interventions that may have preceded or interfered with the physiological process. The aim of this paper is to understand what 'normal birth' is and how it applies in the context of midwife-led care as midwifery moves away from the medical model of care.
Objectives: Identification of the defining attributes of 'normal birth' is the key objective of this paper.
Method: Utilising an approach described by Walker and Avant (1995), a concept analysis of 'normal birth' has been undertaken.
