Abstract
Background. The way that care is provided for women during childbirth affects both their experience of it and its outcome. Aim. To explore how experienced midwives provide care for women and their supporters during labour by identifying expert midwifery care and verbalising midwives' understanding of their care provision.
Method. An ethnographic account of midwifery care for women and their birth partners during labour in two district general hospitals in north-west England, using a purposive sample of six midwives.
