Aug. 1--Ask someone why he or she became a foster parent and it is not unusual for them to answer, "Because I'm crazy."

That, of course, is far from the truth, but foster parents are not the kind of people who spend much time talking about their desire to help a child; they just open their home to provide a safe environment.

A foster parent is the safety net for an endangered child.
