South Africans will be forced to cut back on their energy consumption next year when the government introduces strict new legislation, Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica has said.
Speaking during her budget vote yesterday, Sonjica said: "We are going to regulate the industry in such a way that people will be forced to be energy-efficient. We are coming up with norms and standards for appliances ... we are going to regulate the industry with penalties."
However, the minister was short on details, particularly relating to enforcement.
