ABSTRACT
In January 2007 South Africa joined the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member and during March the country assumed the rotating chairmanship of the Council. After a string of votes blocking the inclusion of grave human rights violations in Burma, Zimbabwe and Sudan on the agenda of the Security Council and attempts to block sanctions against Iran, critics have reacted sharply and are accusing South Africa of having lost its moral compass and of putting its Third World alliances above broader issues of international concern.
