Finland's Marcus Gronholm, driving a Ford Focus, won the Rally of Sardinia here on Sunday after the defending triple world champion, Sebastien Loeb of France, crashed out.

The Finn, himself twice a world champion in 2000 and 2002, finished 29.2sec ahead of compatriot Mikko Hirvonen, with Spain's Dani Sordo a further 56sec adrift in the seventh event of the 16-leg World Rally Championships calendar.

Loeb was leading until a crash on Sunday's first stage forced him to retire and he lost his lead at the top of the drivers' overall standings to Gronholm.
