Article: DAIRY COALITION RESPONSE TO CONSUMERS UNION: POSITION IS A RETREAT, WHETHER THEY ADMIT IT OR NOT

WASHINGTON, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- For the past two years, Consumers Union has played a significant role in alarming American consumers about hazards they say are associated with milk produced by BST-supplemented cows. Consumers Union has shifted from making strident and alarming statements about the safety of this milk -- such as it "may have an effect on bone growth in humans and on the liver" and "enough safety concerns exist to prevent the approval of BST" -- to "the risks to humans posed by BST are largely theoretical." This is a extraordinary shift in position, whether or not Consumers Union chooses to admit it.
