Aug. 3--TAMPA -- Florida transportation officials are reviewing the condition of the state's bridges in the aftermath of the deadly collapse in Minneapolis, but insisted Thursday that motorists can safely cross Tampa Bay area bridges.
"As it is right now, I can categorically tell you that the bridges in the Tampa Bay area are safe to the traveling public," said Pepe Garcia, structures and maintenance engineer for the Department of Transportation in the Bay area.
None of the bridges in this area use steel trusses to support concrete pavement, a structural feature of the Interstate 35W Bridge in Minneapolis.
