Aug. 3--Why own when you can rent?

That's a question quite a few people ask when it comes to boats, because most have limited time in which to use their boats.

Boat rental clubs make it possible to have a boat when you need one, but otherwise avoid the payments and the maintenance.

Basically, club members pay a membership fee, typically $300 per year or more. For this amount, they get a significant discount on boat rentals throughout the year.

At Indian Rocks Beach Boat Club, for example, the membership fee earns $100 off the full-day rental, or $50 off a half-day. Thus, it can pay for itself in three full-day rentals. A 23-foot ...
