NEW KENT Majorie Bevans grew up around horses in Warrenton. After working as a jockey for four years, she became an Episcopal priest. So much for a career with Thoroughbreds.

Well, not exactly.

The University of Virginia graduate has been serving as the head chaplain at Colonial Downs since 2002, and she's once again helping out in the profession she loves.

"I went away thinking I'd never have any association with horses ever again -- something which has been a lifelong passion for me -- and I get this call," Bevans said yesterday before conducting a service at the New Kent County facility.
