Bridges checked often in Va.: State inspects all its bridges and culverts every other year.

Aug. 3--In May, VDOT officials doing a routine inspection of Interstate 295's Varina-Enon Bridge found a corroded cable in one of its sections.

"We immediately posted [a weight restriction for large vehicles on] that bridge, and we're effecting repairs right now," said state Transportation Commissioner David S. Ekern.

All in a day's work for the state's bridge inspectors.

Virginia checks all of its nearly 20,000 bridges and culverts every two years.

"We do 11,000-12,000 bridge inspections a year," said Malcolm T. Kerley, the Virginia Department of Transportation's chief engineer.
