Aug. 3--"It's Midsummer, but High School Football Is Already Starting," read a Virginia headline yesterday.

As the article reported, "Summer vacation ended under a bright sun Wednesday for hundreds of high school football players. Most of South Hampton Roads' 29 Group AAA schools welcomed back players for practice, with the first game a little more than three weeks away for many." The same holds true for other regions across the state.

Meanwhile, the General Assembly still refuses to extend the school year or repeal the state law forbidding most schools to open the academic year before Labor Day. It's primarily a sop to theme parks and other tourist attractions that ...
