Aug. 3--SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY
The Southampton County administrator has sent a letter to the governor saying the rural county west of Hampton Roads doesn't want to be considered as a landing field site for Oceana Naval Air Station's jets.
The 600-square-mile county is home to four of the 10 Virginia locations the Navy has been considering after meeting with opposition in North Carolina.
In the letter, Administrator Michael W. Johnson told Gov. Timothy M. Kaine that "the mere suggestion of an OLF in Southampton County drew immediate and substantial opposition from many of our residents."
