He has even stiffened his backbone relative to Surgeon General nominee Henry Foster. But this crazy quilt of make-my-day stands does not constitute an assault on Gingrichism, and Clinton's toadying to Wall Street on the Mexican bailout undermines his claim of loyalty to the middle class. With the exception of the N.R.A., he will not challenge potent interests. Witness his near-total capitulation to the national security class.
