HAVE you been following the good tree/bad tree controversy in The Mercury letters forum? It started last week when a Harding reader suggested that trees were the solution to global warming because they reduced the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

But this week a Linkhills reader said this was not entirely correct. He said the National Academy of Scientists had explained that the way in which the sun's rays were absorbed or reflected in different areas gave different results.
