Aug. 3--MONROE -- The DTE Energy plant in Monroe confirmed yesterday that the whitish substance that fell from the sky Monday and covered the nearby community of Bolles Harbor was fly ash released from its stacks.

"Well, you know, it's not a frequent occurrence by any means, and it was not a major event," said John Austerberry, a DTE spokesman, when asked what his company would do to prevent such an occurrence from happening again.

One of the facility's four generators shut down at 7:38 p.m. Monday, causing the plant to briefly release exhaust that wasn't filtered properly.
