Piasa Bird to show flying colors.

Aug. 4--ALTON -- The legendary Piasa Bird painting has bright new red, gold and brown "feathers" that nearly jump out to menace motorists heading west along the Great River Road.

The brilliant new colors on the painting of the ferocious man-bird beast are more reminiscent of its predecessor that was painted on a nearby bluff in 1924, replacing the more recent greens of its last incarnation.

It is the careful highlighting, though, on the rugged limestone rocks that makes the painting appear three-dimensional and, therefore, more striking, dramatic and dangerous.
