Aug. 4--These are the kind of kids parents hold up as examples to their own. Straight-A students. Polite, well-mannered, disciplined. Young people who offer a firm handshake, sometimes with a respectful little bow, and look you right in the eye during a conversation.

Those are the qualities students tend to absorb at the Salinas Tae Kwon Do Academy, where much of the education they receive is designed to teach youngsters -- and, indeed, practitioners of all ages -- how to become better people.
