Aug. 5--For many gardeners, the more spectacular a lily the better: the 8-inch-wide white blooms of 'Casa Blanca,' for example, or 6-inch-long trumpets of Lilium 'Regale.' But not all gardeners lean toward the large.
"Bigger is not better," says Woodruff Imberman, president of the Wisconsin-Illinois Lily Society. For a gardener who has a taste for a more refined-looking flower, some shade and a bit of patience, there is a different kind of delight: the elegant small blooms of the martagon lilies. "There is a wonderful grace about these smaller, early-blooming lilies," he says.
