Aug. 5--Most Santa Clara County voters may find themselves using old-fashioned paper ballots on Election Day next year and waiting until hours after the polls close to learn which candidates won.
Secretary of State Debra Bowen has decreed that, for an indefinite amount of time, only one touch-screen voting machine will be allowed at polling places that use machines made by either Sequoia Voting Systems or Diebold Election Systems. For Santa Clara County, that means about 80 percent of the 5,000 Sequoia machines typically deployed across 800 to 1,000 polling places will be decommissioned.
