There is a common misperception about the work of the United Nations. Because short term emergencies claim the attention of states, the longer-term work on development priorities often goes unnoticed. The understandable preoccupation with crises of the moment, contrasted with the slower and longer-term work of development, detracts from efforts to meet the deeper requirements of development. This trend has led to doubts, in many minds, about the continued relevance of international development work.
