Blunt Judges the Judges: While the clock ticks on selecting a new member of the state Supreme Court, Gov. Matt Blunt, Republican lawmakers and conservative groups complain about Missouri's 67-year-old method of picking the state's top court judges.

Aug. 5--In the early months of his first term as Missouri governor, John Ashcroft was riding in a car on the Southwest Traffic Way in Kansas City with his lawyer pal and political supporter John "Woody" Cozad.

"How are we doing here in Kansas City?" Ashcroft asked Cozad.

Ashcroft, a Republican, had just appointed his 33-year-old Chief of Staff Edward "Chip" Robertson to the Missouri Supreme Court. Cozad told Ashcroft everything was fine except lawyers were complaining about Robertson, saying he was too inexperienced.
