SAN FRANCISCO -- The jury is still out on whether Unocal Corp. will succeed in its "wrong-headed" effort to patent a variety of California reformulated gasolines, said Lodwrick Cook, chairman of Atlantic Richfield Co. (Arco).
"I don't think they'll be successful in their patent application, but that remains to be seen," he said here Wednesday at the World Conference on Reformulated Fuels and Refinery Processing.
Cook suggested that Unocal might prevail only in a patent covering a narrowly defined fuel, leaving plenty of room for others without need of licensing.
