This is a response to citing Jacksonville, Florida, as one of the "Best Cities for African Americans" in your May 2007 issue. The Farmers moved to Jacksonville nine years ago. They appear to be a nice family but, unfortunately, they lack the historical overview needed to evaluate the community.
The 2006 Jacksonville Community Council Inc. Race Relations Progress Report stated that "half of all black families live below 175% of the federal poverty line," "black families received public assistance at five times the rate of white families," and "business leadership and ownership in Jacksonville remained predominantly white."
