Aug. 6--ALTON -- The owner of the city's best-known bar is pushing Alton leaders to give him a piece of a neighboring street, so he can put in outdoor seating -- particularly for smokers.
However, what started out as a request to vacate a street turned Friday into a land-swap proposal.
Ed Sholar Sr., an owner of Fast Eddie's Bon-Air tavern, 1530 E. Fourth St., first asked the city to vacate Pearl Street from Fourth Street -- by the bar's front corner door -- north to Bozza Street. The street runs between the tavern and its large parking lot to the east.
